Presentation of Colors by Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue

Are you looking for a meaningful way to spend your Memorial Day weekend? Mark your calendar for Sunday, May 25 at 7 p.m., when the Hilton Head Choral Society hosts its annual “America Sings!” concert at First Presbyterian Church (540 William Hilton Parkway). It’s a local favorite – and for good reason.

This concert isn’t just about great music (though there’s plenty of that!). It’s a powerful tribute to the brave men and women who’ve served our country. With a mix of patriotic tunes, moving tributes, and a whole lot of community spirit, it’s an evening that really captures the true meaning of Memorial Day.

This year we welcome back the incredibly talented Category V Brass Quintet from Columbia, SC. This group performs with top symphonies across the Southeast and they know how to bring the house down with their bold, brassy sound.

The evening kicks off with a Presentation of Colors by Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue, followed by the “Star Spangled Banner.” From there, you’ll hear powerful pieces like “A Just and Lasting Peace” (featuring words from Lincoln’s second inaugural address), “After the War,” and the always inspiring “Armed Forces Salute.”

The special keynote speaker will be Army Chaplain Major General William “Bill” Green, Jr. who grew up on Hilton Head Island. Upon graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Army as a Cannon Crewman and Field Radio Repairman. In 1986, he left the active army to pursue his calling and to become an ordained minister and Army Chaplain. Chaplain Green is a 1989 distinguished military graduate of Savannah State University. In 1992, he graduated from Emory University with a Master of Divinity degree. He became an Army Chaplain in 1994. Chaplain Green has served in various capacities throughout his tenure across the United States and internationally.

“This is a concert our singers look forward to all season long,” says Dr. Dustin Ousley, Artistic Director of the HHCS.“It’s an honor to sing for those who’ve served – and a great way to bring the community together.”

People of all ages come out for this family-friendly event, many dressed in red, white, and blue. It is an annual Lowcountry tradition celebrating our country and a perfect way to round out your Memorial Day weekend.
